Geography is one of the best optional subject for Civil Services Examination's point of view. It has a great and appreciable credit starting from preliminary examination to Interview. But often people get worry about the vastness of geography. Indeed it is vast and has some complex facets too. Although many of us still pursuing the same and now a days trend has been changed, the success ratio has declined for the people who opted for geography as their optional subject in Civil Services Mains examination. But still the popularity of geography as an optional subject is not going to exhaust by any means, because it has certain advantages over other subjects. You may or may not believe about what I said but on the basis of facts that are listed below, I would make my stand clear.
1. Preliminary Examination- Almost 20% weightage is given to geography only. Let talk about how? Environment and Ecology, Core Geography like physical and human geography, again sustainable development is more or less associated with human geography like- Knowledge of HDI, HI,SRB(Sex rate at birthplace), Literacy, Population pyramid, MMR(Maternal Mortality Rate).Likewise list goes on.Then Science & Technology is also has an amalgamation of some important facets of geography like Satellite Orbital Information, Relationship among Agriculture, Environment and S&T. Most important thing is that knowledge of geography makes out understanding better and efficient in other subjects as well. So one can not skip it, Even if she is not opting geography as her optional subject.
2.General Study Paper 1- Here I would say that go through last year question papers, you will be getting atleast 80 to 100 marks for geography only out of 250. It means (35 to 45)%. More interesting thing is that best score for GS 1 is around 140 and from here you can understand the importance of geography.
3.General Study Paper 2- I think you might aware of term Geopolitics, while reading international relations, just see the syllabus of GS 2, You will find India and it's neighborhood countries, India's Diaspora, Bilateral treatise and global grouping involving or affecting the India's interest. So for this the knowledge of world geography indirectly becomes important, it actually proliferates our holding on concerned topics and gives a physical feel about how the countries, organizations , Institutions are interacting on a global scale. This only an aspect over which I focused in similar way policies of government for difficult terran inhabitants and political organization inside the country can be understood easily with the help of geography. I would say that analytical skill is required for proving above points so prerequisite is analytical skill, only then you will be able to know about the power of geographical relativity w.r.t GS
4.General Study Paper 3- This paper has two important section that are directly related to geography- Applied Economics & Agriculture plus Disaster Management. Along with this Internal & border Security may require prerequisite knowledge of physical as well as human indian geography to make things more clear while answer writing.
5.General Study Paper 4- I know most of you will think that I am a geography obsessed person who is trying to link it with all things. Yes you are almost right but think about if your obsession gives you positivity about something that often people ignore or give up, go for it. So again here in GS 4 that has four main parts (Psychology, Philosophy, Ethics-values, duties, emotional intelligence, attitude etc. of a Civil Servant), & Case Studies based on former things.
Now role of geography comes here while solving case studies-example, case study is based upon a public policy formulation and it's implementation for socio- economic development of vulnerable and deprived section of society then use block diagram, mention concerned sections, write their socio-economic condition using legitimate keywords like literacy, education, health care facilities, cost of living, basic infrastructure, sources of livelihoods etc. {Note- All are closely associated with population geography}, Similarly many genuine and helpful features of geography can be applied in GS 4.
6.Interview- I think if indirectly GS 4 has an importance of knowledge of geography than during personality test it will surely help to get into the list of selects. Try to yourself to find out those things.
